Intervention on 3rd Congress of European Left
Paris 3-5 December 2010
Dear comrades,
Only 4 minutes in the crucial 3rd congress of our Left,
Only 4 minutes in the crucial financial and economical conjuncture of my country,
of the present and the future of employees, women, immigrants, young generation,
Of the whole Europe.
For this reason, permit to me to insist on three points,
three concrete proposals that I do estimate that they should join the plan and the action of the European Left for a social Europe
The first point concerns the European character of the debt crisis which poses the urgent need for a European regulation.
This regulation must include the annulation of part of the sovereign debt, in order to assist the indebted countries to develop policies for the restructure of their economies and avoid the destruction of social cohesion. Otherwise, the on-going destructive process will end up to the destruction of the Euro and the EU.
The second point concerns the so-called “Crisis Management or Orderly Default Mechanism” to which we are against.
Instead, we must propose the establishment of a permanent protective mechanism of solidarity (and not of punishment) of weaker states. This Mechanism will cover also the states which do not belong to the Euro zone. This mechanism must be set in motion at the early stages of a crisis and not after it has completed its disastrous effects.
The third point concerns a process of redistribution of wealth between the strong and weaker economies. This means a much bigger European budget, which will transfer funds to the weaker states and regions in order to balance the present enormous inequalities.
We must abolish,
We must fight for the European Stability Pact to be abolished.
We need,
the whole Europe needs a new Growth Pact, not based on catastrophical monetarist indicators, like inflation and public deficits, but on social indicators, like unemployment, economic development, trade and balance of payments deficits.
Only such a new Pact can become the base for stable growth, for social protection, for the social cohesion which is threatened more than ever.
Dear comrades,
On Monday morning we are leaving Paris with confidence for our European Left’ s goals and aims.
On Monday morning we are leaving Paris with proposals that are more than necessary for the future of European societies.
On Monday morning we are leaving Paris with faith that another world is possible and we know that we achieve it.
